Solar street lighting for the Caribbean

For all the heartache and destruction that they caused, the hurricanes of 2017 have created an incredible opportunity for communities to switch to grid-independent, energy-efficient street light systems. When your community invests in a new streetlight system, it needs to be an investment that your grandkids will be glad you made.

Unfortunately, where there is a disaster, there will also be “leeches”: opportunistic companies who quickly rebrand imported products and sell them at inflated prices. We’re different. We’re excited to bring our proven track record in global installation projects, as well as our 5-year plan to deliver lighting systems that change communities.

With successfully completed projects in the US Virgin Islands (including the Front Street–Grand Turk Road Rehabilitation Project by LM Shaffer, Inc., built on Stealth 120 fixtures with poles rated for 170 MPH), we are excited to use our expertise to help your community find a lighting solution that will make a difference.

When you attach a solar panel to a light pole, it creates new wind-load challenges. To combat this, we use a shorter, stronger light pole, then attach the solar panel as low as possible to decrease the wind load and distribute that load across the entire pole. We also harden the entire lighting system: the solar panel uses a hardened glass that is rated for adverse conditions, and the connections are waterproofed to help our lights withstand the strongest storms. The end result is a solar-powered street lamp design that is more proven than most of our competitors.

Next-generation LED, kinder to the night

Unlike the old mercury or sodium-vapor lights, the new LED light designs use much less energy. They also create more directional light and reduce ambient light pollution, which means that at night you can see more stars.

It also helps wildlife who rely on the moon for navigation, such as sea turtles, from being distracted by ambient light, instead finding the moon, and allowing for more successful hatchings. That is why we focus on quality and next-generation technology.

The ultimate hurricane-resistant design

If you are contacting us about our lights, please be sure to specify that you are seeking a hurricane-resistant configuration. We make several important upgrades to these quotes:

  • Hardened solar panels are resistant to flying debris and wind pressure.
  • Hardened mounting brackets support the panel in wind gusts; we mount the panels lower on the post to distribute wind load more evenly.
  • Well-ventilated lights prevent water accumulation and keep functioning throughout the storm: added coverage for rescue crews and faster recovery after a disaster.
  • Improved waterproofing seals all connectors against water entry, protecting the circuits from driving rain and swells.

High-end manufacturing, third-party tested

The solar lighting industry is largely dominated by a handful of Chinese manufacturing plants, so most brands simply import solar lights and affix their label. This creates an environment where third-party companies sell imported lights at an incredible markup while providing a sub-par product with minimal quality control.

We’re proud to be an industry leader when it comes to inventing an innovative lamp that is designed to out-perform the competition, and all of our components are independently tested by a third party. For the Caribbean islands, we are excited to offer a lamp that is wind-resistant (up to 180 mph), dust-resistant, and that operates with greater efficiency. Our lamps require very little maintenance, so even the smallest communities can take advantage of grid-free lighting without investing in costly upkeep. We then stand behind our products with a 3-year warranty on the entire luminaire.

Our lights also offer easy assembly and disassembly and better heat ventilation to improve the usable life of the lamps. Whether you need 10 light poles or 1,000, we can deliver your next project. No auxiliary power and no trenching required: our lights are designed to work 100% off-grid. Solar Lighting International’s street lamp systems for parking lots and highways come in many options: 7,400 lumens, 14,800 lumens, and our new 22,200+ lumens for standard fixtures.

What makes our lights better

A Better Panel

Installations near water must be water, wind and salt resistant, so we chose a monocrystalline solar panel that stands up to hurricane-level winds and relentless salt-laden ocean breezes. It delivers 50% more power per unit area while maintaining a low voltage-temperature coefficient, producing electricity from the crack of dawn until nightfall in a smaller footprint.

Patented Charge Controller

Our controller uses patented MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) charging technology to increase charge current by up to 30% over conventional solar charge controllers: more power for less cost. Up to eight controllers can network together and communicate as a single controller to better store and conserve energy.

170 MPH Fiberglass Poles

Our fiberglass light poles are rated to 170 MPH, and every luminaire is engineered to be more proven than most competitors. This added engineering is reassurance for our clients, ensuring your investment stays cutting-edge for years to come.
